Ninja Gaiden 4 Review

More than ten years of fans murmuring, and Ninja Gaiden 4 has finally returned one of the most iconic hack-and-slash franchises in gaming history. Co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, this entry captures the intensity and precision of the trilogy, while mixing in the cinematic flair and mechanical depth now associated with action games today. The result is a brutal, stylish, albeit sometimes inconsistent return to the shadows.

At its core, Ninja Gaiden has always revolved around lightning-fast, punishing combat – and here, NG4 certainly delivers. Ryu Hayabusa is back with a wider assortment of weapons, better mobility, and a “Berserker Gauge” system that awards aggressive play. The combat feels part Ninja Gaiden, and part modern influences like Devil May Cry 5 and Bayonetta. Each hit has impact, every dodge counts, and enemies do not pull any punches on the player.

A new mechanic, Bloodraven Form, briefly turns Ryu into a force of nature, which leads to some entertaining combo chains and screen-clearing attacks. The system adds welcome variability to the boss-fights, and large group encounters.

Enemy AI has also been upgraded: grunts don’t all just charge forward; they dodge, parry, and cooperate in higher difficulties. Bosses also serve as spatial and dexterity test; patterns must be recognized and mechanics executed. There is a steep-to-demanding learning curve, but the sense of accomplishment at the end is high.

The story is cliche and stays in alignment with low-budget B-movies where Ryu is immersed in world-ending conflicts with dark cults, demon invaders and ancient secrets. The stakes are high, but the writing is lacking in terms of emotional depth.

Nonetheless, the world design is much grander from past entries. Levels cover everything from cyberpunk cities to temples that are ancient, and they are groused into enormous detail. There is also more of an emphasis on vertical traversal… it is not just slash-slash-kill, but also about your movement has wall-running, grappling via a zip-line, and platforming sections that blend into the combat.

Graphically NG4 is a step above, but not a generational leap. Character models are highly detailed, blood splatter is satisfying to observe, and animations move fluidly. Despite this some worlds felt a bit plain or less populated than similar games like Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima.

The game has an excellent technical performance, hitting a solid 60fps at launch on PC and console, with minimal load times. The soundtrack is well done, combining traditional Japanese instrumentation with aggressive metal riffs that fit the high-octane action. The voice acting is perfectly fine but doesn’t stick with after the game is done.

As one might expect, NG4 can be difficult. This isn’t a hand holding game, and death can occur often on normal difficulty. Fortunately, the developers included plenty of difficulties, including Hero Mode for players who want to experience the story and not the combat. This is a great compromise for the new audience, while protecting the veteran audience.

To conclude, Ninja Gaiden 4 doesn’t redefine video games—but it doesn’t have to. It successfully delivers a brutal challenge, a stylish aesthetic fans love, and just enough modern polish to feel current. Outside of the story and some of the presentation, which fall short of the top tier in the genre, the razor-sharp combat excels.
